Overview: Thomas McAuley is Navigation Officer on the P & O ferry Pride of Hull. He discusses the importance of mathematics for anyone wishing to work as a pilot on a ship. In this clip, he demonstrates how he uses a fixed object such as an oil-rig, to find out if he is on-course. The mathematics used, involves formulae, angles, isoceles triangles, distance and bearings.
